When scaling up, you cannot be everything to everyone at once, you have to make choices and set priorities. This relates both to external and internal matters. Externally, set priorities in market segments you want to enter and target audiences you want to reach, you can’t be everywhere and serve everyone. Internally, make sure your team knows what tasks have priority over others. Scaling up is a lot of work, so to not get lost in all the madness, every department needs to know its priority.
Be specific, not vague. Make sure that the company goals are clear to everyone on the team. This way, individual tasks get more concrete, and employees know what they are working towards. The result is that everyone in the organization can see the end goal in everything they do.
Scaling up requires a lot of money and resources, there is no way around this. From hiring more people to producing more products, you have expenses across every facet of your business. Make sure you take finances seriously and can track where resources are going and needed. Think about securing funding, whether it be external or internal. Finally, remember that you may need to keep aside some reserves.
It’s crucial to keep checking on progress while you’re in the middle of the scaling process. Is everything going according to plan? Where can you improve? Are you actually finishing the desired projects? Check if everyone throughout the entire organization still knows what part they play in the scale up journey. Don’t be scared to adjust while executing if needed.
Opportunities can be anywhere, so look everywhere. You never know what may catch your eye and where you find inspiration. Are you a Medtech company? Don’t just look at developments in the Medtech field, but expand your horizon. Inspiration often comes from the most unexpected places so keep your eyes open.
